If you have a C5 manual transmission, I bet you are fed up with this FEATURE. I will try to provide a few ways around the problem - that even I can do. Basically, you have to pull the ship shift connector plug from the transmission. A couple folks sell dummy plugs to keep the connector clean (ZIp Products, etc.), but you will keep getting a computer message on the ICM display. If you want to eliminate the computer error message, RTB Motorsports has a little device ($40) that inserts in line with the cable connectors which makes the computer think the cable is still plugged in - no more computer error messages.
Basically, you have a 30 second easy install (no cutting or splicing)! Just jack the car up, locate the gold skip shift solenoid (above the orange sticker which says "Use Dexron Fluid"), unplug the skip shift harness, plug the Jet Skip Shift Eliminator into the solenoid and the ship shift harness and that's it! No "Service Engine Soon" lights, compatible with 1996-2000 OBD-II computer systems! Not sure yet about the 2001/2002, but I would be surprised if it doesn't work. The link to RTB Motorsports is:

The rear end looks like this:
The connector plug looks like this:
Another possible option I pulled of a bulletin board is as follows ( NOTE - I haven't tried it, so use at your own risk). Credit for this fix goes to Hank Renken
If you know a little electronics/auto repair, you can bypass the 1>4 shift by doing this:
You will need a 1/2 watt 470 ohm resistor & some shrink tubing (avail. at Radio Shack).
Open the access cover to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This is at the rear of the right wheel assembly, underneath the wheelhouse filler panel; it is behind the TAC
(throttle actuator control) module in this compartment. You don't have to remove either
module, just the PCM connectors. It has 2 connectors underneath held down by 9/32" hex
screws. Make sure the ignition is off & you aren't statically charged! Remove the C1 (blue) connector (both are gray on the cover) Pin 79 has a gray or white wire; cut it, remove about 1/2" of wire, slide on the shrink tubing, strip both ends & solder in the resistor, slide on & shrink tubing & replace the connector. You may have to do the PCM idle learn procedure (Turn off ign. & A/C, apply parking brake w/trans. in neutral, start engine, make sure coolant is above 176 deg. F.,idle 5 minutes, turn engine off for 30 sec.)
Simply cutting the wire will disable 1>4 shift, but the check engine light will stay
on; the resistor doesn't allow enough current for the 1>4 solenoid to work, but it will fool the module into thinking it is working!
Anyway, have fun. Send any input on your experience to the Webmaster.
